All of us have experienced “that” type of nostalgia when we pick up our old consoles. Xbox head Phil Spencer wants to preserve old video games through emulation. Although Microsoft is currently doing this, they want it to be an “industry-wide thing.”

In an interview with Axios, “My hope (and I think I have to present it that way as of now) is as an industry we'd work on legal emulation that allowed modern hardware to run any (within reason) older executable allowing someone to play any game," said Phil Spencer.

If realized, this can be a life-changing step for the video game industry. After all, players who own new hardware (no matter which brand) would be able to play their favorite game from 15 years ago. Also, it could help indie studios to preserve their old games as well.

Spencer also talked specifically about video game preservation. "I think we can learn from the history of how we got here through the creative... I love it in movies and TV, and there's positive reasons for gaming to want to follow," said Xbox chief.
