Gamescom 2020 will not be canceled for now

We should note that this may change.

With multiple major events already canceled, the gaming industry is facing a tough year. Gamescom organizers announced that the Gamescom 2020 is still a go despite the looming coronavirus fears. The biggest gaming convention of the year takes place between August 26-29.

Above, you can find the official Twitter announcement from the organizers of the event. They mention the Cologne event ban, effective until April 10, and why it does not affect the Gamescom. Since the event is held in August, organizers think that the coronavirus threat will not be a thing until then.

“We are currently receiving inquiries about how a possible threat from the coronavirus could affect Gamescom. We take this topic very seriously because the health of all trade fair visitors and partners is our top priority,” states the organizers.

“On March 10, the city of Cologne banned all major events with more than 1,000 participants up to and including April 10 on the basis of a decree issued by the state government on the same day. Since Gamescom 2020 takes place at the end of August, we are not currently affected by this decree.”

We will let you know as soon as we have more information on this. For now, it is clear that the event planning will continue until further notice. We certainly hope that the coronavirus threat becomes less of a threat until August.
